Chapter 8

The image of the large demon about to tear into Rosa and Ismoden coming up to charge—which would have put Rosa in between them and hurt her all the more—was imprinted in Silver’s mind as he could only watch with rage and helplessness. Then rage turned up a notch and thundered—and his body snapped into movement as the only thought he had was that Rosa could not die. She couldn’t.

Light flashed. It blinded him, but he kept moving until he was near enough to throw his body in between them. He braced for the slash of pain, for the cold numbness to hit him in case the creature tore through him too much and he was beyond just mere pain. Nothing came but that light, pushing through with so much force that the world stilled at that moment. Then the light faded as fast as it came in, clearing his vision until he saw three figures at once: Ismoden back to being unconscious, Rosa uninjured and trembling…and the demon crumpled to the ground, but not intact. Its body parts were strewn all over, blood smudging the ground and a foul smell renting the air.

“Rosa!” he shouted, reaching for her. He stopped when she jerked back, her blue eyes not on him but on his hands. Frowning, Silver looked down. “What…?”

The light was still there, no longer as blinding but present…insistent. It glowed at the tip of his fingers before he felt it: the surge of energy that came from somewhere deep within and wanted to come out. He fisted his hands to get rid of it, then collapsed on the ground when pain grazed his skin.

Movement caught his attention. His fingers flicked and shot more of the blinding light toward the large demon’s head, which Nemodar was nudging. Nemodar jumped back with a betrayed cry while the head shattered into smithereens. The two other demons popped into view, too, braced and eyeing him warily. The energy resurged—

“Stop. Stop it, Silver.”

Rosa’s voice was a whisper, but it might as well have been a gunshot for its effect on him. He fisted his hands again. This time, he gritted through the pain, meeting her gaze and watching the horror form on her face as the light just kept growing. Silver tried harder, nails digging until his skin until he bled. It worked as the energy dwindled, retreated inside him…then, was gone. It didn’t stop the jumbling of his thoughts while Rosa spoke in soft tones.

“It’s okay…no, don’t. Ismoden. Heel. Go with the others. I’m warning you.”

An image of him shouting out the order to a group of demons fluttered in his mind and shook his soul. Another image of him waving his hands and destroying everything in his path came swept in. Trapped in that vision, he could only watch as demons were tossed away and more came, each one hell-bent on retaliating. But his light just kept going, lasering in on the nearest ones and disabling them before they could hurt him.
